Retention: The Million Dollar Question

Retention: The Million Dollar Question

Tracey Jones
We can only get it right with the right people; retention is about keeping them. Why do people keep showing up for work after they've decided to join your organization? Kevin's question struck at the heart of what we all need to consider: Employees come to work for one of two reasons—to transact or to transform. They are there for a paycheck, or they are there for a payback, to grow and make an impact, to evolve themselves or the enterprise.

Nothing you do as a leader to try and help the individual will register with them because their focus is inward. I have worked in numerous entities of all sizes across the globe over the past forty years. I have been in countless personal and familial groupings as well. Unfortunately, I have experienced this type of hard-hearted resistance across all sizes and types of industry, as well as nationality. As leaders, our instinct is to try and fix the issue. You can't fix it because we are responsible to people and not for people.

I hear a great deal about culture, and it seems to be this elusive wild animal that may be kind or may tear up your organization. I think it gets blamed or praised for a whole lot of the success and failures business owners and entrepreneurs experience. Individuals are what constitutes a culture. Each is responsible for the energy and behaviors he or she brings into the workplace. Each employee must continually ask themselves, "Am I here to make a difference for the organization or am I here to make a difference for myself?"

Seeking an Organization that Turned Chaos into Opportunity

Tremendous tribe, I need your help! I am searching for an organization that has successfully navigated its way through a challenge as part of my doctoral research on the perceptions of leader effectiveness in an organizational crisis. My goal is to conduct a case study on follower motivation and engagement as the crisis unfolded, and the team emerged on the other side. At the core of the proposed research is the study of leader perceptions in the follower's mind.
