What I'd Give for an Hour

What I'd Give for an Hour

Tracey Jones

October is my favorite month, and it is the month I lost both of my parents. My mother, Gloria, went home on October 14 seven years ago, and my father, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, went home on October 16 eighteen years ago. What I’d give for an hour with them again. Then the pastor who baptized me in the River Jordan preached a sermon on 1 Thessalonians 4, and I wept. Paul wrote that chapter to grieving people, and his answer to them is the answer I needed this week: the dead in Christ rise first, and we are caught up together with them. I am not going to get an hour with my parents. I am going to get eternity, and I may be in the generation that never sees death at all. This October I am not only looking back. I am looking up.

Today, we often avoid death, preferring clinical detachment. Yet the wisdom of the Greeks reminds us that when we allow death to reclaim its place in the circle of life, we gain a fuller understanding of our existence. Embracing death can lead us to live with greater purpose, gratitude, and connection to life's rhythms.

May the miracle of the empty tomb inspire us to live with faith, hope, and courage, now and always. Jesus is the way, the truth, the light, and the PEACE that we so desperately need. May the blessings of the Resurrection come to you anew this glorious Easter season.

It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, yet for many, Christmas 2020 is turning out to be the most frightening time of the year. Let’s alter our perspective on what’s swirling around in our heads. Christmas wasn’t always so merry and bright. If we go back to the first couple of Christmases, there was plenty of fear and angst there as well. Let’s look at our ancestors and see how they handled events.
