This Thanksgiving, let's reflect on how we can give—truly give—without expectation. Whether it's a kind word, an act of service, or simply our time, giving from the heart changes us. It allows us to see the needs of others and respond with love and compassion.
How often do we interrupt the counting of our blessings with a critical arrow? Our bellies are full, and yet we bellyache. Even when our cups runneth over, however, we mourn like they are running out. We thank God for our daily bread, yet the next words out of our mouth bemoan tomorrow's anticipated scarcity.
A friend of mine recently shared she had been asked to conduct training in "Civility." Seems like this is the new “thing” every organization needs to emphasize and teach. We both chuckled because we know civility, like all the great truths and behaviors in life, isn’t taught, but instead caught, and it originates in a thankful heart. The heart is the wellspring where fountains of gratitude arise.
Thankfulness is the most reliable indicator of maturity. The older I get, the more people I realize I need to give thanks for because, without them, I wouldn't be who I am today. Heck, I’m even able to give thanks for the bad ones too! There are four strings of words that have profoundly impacted my life. Some were meant to encourage, others to correct. But in each instance, I can still hear the same dialogue as if it was happening now. In each case, it was only a single sentence, but its brevity did not diminish its power.
