Just as the Ten Commandments emerged carved in stone, an organization's values must also be set in an unshakable foundation. Without these guiding principles, any attempt at fostering an ethical culture becomes like building on shifting sands. These values are the cornerstone and nothing meaningful can be built without them.
As a child, I was captivated by the mysteries of the universe, a fascination deepened by Carl Sagan's iconic series, Cosmos. Even then, I struggled with the concept of everything originating from nothing—a single molecule sparking the vast expanse of the universe, leading to the Big Bang, and culminating in the complex world we see today. After all, science is about replicatable processes and can only speculate on origins. This early pondering introduced me to the concept of "Turtles all the way down."
Several years ago, I got involved in a business venture after vetting the requestor’s credibility with someone I highly regarded in the field of endeavor. It turns out they were wrong, so wrong it took precious and extensive resources from me to disengage. All because I took one person's word of approval.
With the official kickoff of the next season upon us, I always reflect on my tremendous upbringing and how the time between academic years—known to most as ‘summer vacation’— was handled. For most young people, these next few months are a time of rest and relaxation; a time to turn off the alarm clocks, cease learning and enjoy fun in the sun.
We are so quick to judge others when the first person we should judge is ourselves. I am not morally superior to anyone else. When I take offense at the slightest pretense, I reveal just how shallow I am.
